In the first of the Spikes & Spurs romance series, Brown (the Honky Tonk romances) sets up immediate physical attraction between stiletto-wearing career-minded Austin Lanier, who's come to tiny Terral, Okla., to scatter her grandma's ashes, and Rye O'Donnell, a neighboring cattle rancher who supplies bulls for the rodeo circuit. Taking a two-week leave from her oil executive job in Tulsa so she can settle the estate, Austin learns she's inherited Granny's watermelon farm and winery, and she falls right into country ways: wearing overalls, planting seeds, and snacking on rattlesnake. Austin and Rye get along brilliantly from the start; the only real conflict comes from Austin's struggle to choose between high-powered city life and the charming rodeos, country songs, quirky senior citizens, and billowing dust of Terral.
