Grades 5-8 Thrift shopping is enjoying a surge in popularity as more celebrities hit secondhand shops and upcycling becomes an eco-chic buzzword. Yet being a successful thrift shopper requires more than just luck, and this manual offers the ins and outs of digging up hidden treasures and scoring the best bargains. An introduction to the types of thrift shops is offered as well as a litany of reasons that thrift shopping is a worthwhile hobby. General guidelines for what to watch out for, especially when shopping for clothes, are explained in detail. The benefits and drawbacks of online thrifting are weighed, and the book provides names of the most reputable websites for both reselling and purchasing secondhand goods. Step-by-step upcycling projects, such as turning a sweater into a throw pillow or an old book into a tablet cover, are provided with photographic directions, and Donovan explores the potential to sell upcycled goods after they have been restored or repurposed. Scores of print and web sources for extra inspiration are included in the end matter.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
