Herz explores the complex psychology behind food purchasing and consumption with both scholarship and humor. Sadly, narrator Jo Anna Perrin fails to convey the pleasure in this work of popular science. Her voice throughout the production is dry to the point of scratchiness, with minimal modulation in pitch or tone. Though the text features many humorous and pop culture references, they often fall flat. Some of Herz's sentences are indeed long and convoluted, and Perrin occasionally seems to lose the directional thread. This fascinating, fun book loses its impact with the lackluster quality of the audio production. C.M.A. © AudioFile 2018, Portland, Maine
