Sea Salt and Honey
Celebrating the Food of Kardamili in 100 Sun-Drenched Recipes: A New Greek Cookbook
Sea Salt and Honey is a delightful ode to the rustic lifestyle of Nicholas Tsakiris' birthplace. Though America has been his adopted country for the last thirty years, he was drawn back to his homeland after his two daughters, Olivia and Chloe, were grown. Over the years, Olivia and Chloe too felt the desire to reconnect to their roots. The family now live almost full time on the Mani coast, in a little house nestled in the Taygetos foothills close to Kardamili—a charming village of roughly 450 residents, where a walk across town takes five minutes.
With the abundance of nature and boundless possibilities of ingredients around them, the Tsakiris' indulge in their favorite pastime—cooking delicious meals together while sharing family stories. Like many Greeks, they eat seasonally, preparing recipes inspired by the food grown in their own backyard including such hearty, wholesome, and easy-to-make dishes as:
* Smoked Trout and Wilted Lettuce Garden Salad
* Savory Greek Yogurt Bowls
* Winter Garden Pasta with Purple Cabbage, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Sage, and Dried Chiles
* Grilled Octopus Marinated in Red Wine Vinegar, Honey, and Oregano
* Lamb Slow-Cooked in the Gastra (Clay Pot)
* Sea Salt and Honey Chocolate Chunk Cookies
Filled with stories, adventures, memories, and James Beard award–winning photographer Romas Foord's beautiful photographs, Sea Salt and Honey pays tribute to authentic and Greek-inspired cuisine, celebrating a place where the love of the land, of nature, and of a simple but rich life makes you feel at home.

Ah, the lure of the Mediterranean coast, which charmed this troika of family member-authors into part- and full-time life in Greece. The Tsakiris (father Nicholas and daughters Chloe and Olivia) found nirvana in life on Kardamili, a 450-person community that boasts almost every food that a human could want. Collaborating on this 100-recipe collection, the authors eschew most traditional Greek recipes (no hummus or moussaka) and instead focus on light, fresh, and seasonal dishes. For them, this means taking advantage of seafood, vegetables, and herbs native to the area and reaching into other cuisines--Indian, Spanish, African, and more--to meld ""best of"" culinary experiences and ingredients. A few examples: spicy berbere chickpeas, risotto with pistachios and scallions, salmon masala with wild rice, and fig frozen yogurt. Sidebars are instructive and charming, covering topics like beach bounties (sea salt and sea fennel) and monastery herbs, as are the stories. Foodies and armchair travelers alike will be powerless to resist the travelogue-like photographs of life and food.COPYRIGHT(2021) Booklist, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

The Greek American Tsakiris family (father Nicholas and daughters Chloe and Olivia) present a charming cookbook celebrating their life in Kardamili, a coastal village in southern Greece. The book is a well-balanced combination of recipes, ideas for entertaining, and storytelling. Readers are welcomed into the Tsakiris home to share a meal and conversation about their beloved Greece and traditions. The recipes spotlight fresh, seasonal produce and emphasize cooking mindfully for health. Highlights include inventive pastas and risottos, tea blends, and festive small bites (meze). The family also includes creative spins on international favorites (like pico de gallo or Buffalo cauliflower) and recipes incorporating spices like berbere or za'atar. Vibrant photographs by Romas Foord transport readers to the Greek coast. This book will appeal to home cooks interested in regional Greek cuisine, those looking for ways to infuse Mediterranean flavor into their cooking, and fans of Letitia Clark's Bitter Honey: Recipes and Stories from Sardinia. VERDICT A lively celebration of family and Mediterranean cooking that offers a clear, intimate regional perspective.--Kate Bellody, SUNY New Paltz
