Judi Bowker and Anna Massey star in this gripping BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation featuring young detective Cordelia Gray. Mark Calendar, 21 years old and in his final year at Cambridge, leaves university without warning and takes a job as a gardener. Eighteen days later he is found hanging in the cottage where he lived. The verdict at the inquest is suicide. Cordelia Gray, now sole proprietor of the Pryde Detective Agency, is hired by Mark's father, the eminent scientist Sir Ronald, to piece together the facts surrounding his death. Gradually she sheds light on the apparent suicide, and long-suppressed family secrets begin to emerge. Whilst further tragedy is in store for the family, Cordelia discovers that, in the midst of Mark's many friends, there is a dangerous enemy with the cold and complex mind of a killer.

AudioFile Magazine
This radio drama offers listeners an opportunity to enjoy new material in the dramatized audio format. Originating from a BBC production, this popular mystery from P.D. James sounds almost like the sound track from a public television program--but there is nothing missing. Visual aspects of the scenes are amplified with sound effects. Each character is portrayed by an actor/actress who is credited on the packaging material. A range of accents and characterizations contributes to this complete performance. Though lovers of James's subtlety will miss a slow unfolding of the plot, the presentation has many dimensions. R.F.W. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine -

The day Cordelia Gray arrives at work at Pryde's Detective Agency she finds that her partner, Bernie Pryde, has committed suicide. This is one of P.D. James's best mysteries, combining a clear, occasionally lyrical use of English with a good plot, strong characters, and the gritty realism that is part of her unique style. Davina Porter's performance increases the listener's enjoyment of the book by adding dimension to the characters and providing smooth narrative flow. Her English accent gives the reading a strong sense of place. This production does what the best audiobooks do--it takes an outstanding text and gives it finely realized depth and dimension. J.D.P.
